Bluebell Photoshoots in Hertfordshire | What to Wear & How to Book
Every year, around this time, the same messages start popping up:
“Are you doing bluebell photos this year?”
Short answer… yes. Of course. I wouldn’t miss them.
If you’ve ever walked through a bluebell woodland in spring, you’ll know why. That soft purple haze, the fresh greens, the light filtering through the trees… it’s one of the most beautiful backdrops we get all year here in Hertfordshire.
The only catch? It doesn’t last long.
So if you’re thinking about a bluebell photoshoot in Hertford or the wider Hertfordshire area, here’s everything you need to know: what to wear, what’s included, and how to book.
Bluebell Photoshoots in Hertfordshire
These sessions take place in a carefully chosen local woodland near Hertford / Bengeo, where the bluebells create that classic spring look everyone loves.
They’re designed to be:
- Relaxed
- Natural
- Uncomplicated
No stiff posing, no pressure, just genuine moments captured in a beautiful setting.
If you’re looking for natural family photography in Hertfordshire, this is one of the best times of year to do it.
What to Wear for Your Bluebell Photoshoot
This is the question I get asked the most – and it really does make a difference.
The aim is to keep things soft and timeless so the focus stays on you, not the clothes.
Colours that work beautifully:
- Neutrals (cream, beige, light grey)
- Soft pastels (pale blue, blush, sage)
- Denim
- Light earthy tones
Things to avoid:
- Bright reds or neon colours
- Large logos or bold graphics
- Busy patterns
- Heavy black (it can feel a bit harsh in woodland light)
For families:
You don’t need to match – just coordinate.
If it all looks calm and balanced laid out together, it’ll photograph well.
Practical tips:
- Bring wellies or sensible shoes (it is a woodland!)
- Layers are always a good idea
- Spare clothes for little ones = always wise
If you’re unsure, feel free to send me options, I’m happy to help.

If you’re worried about awkward posing, don’t be.
These are very much relaxed, documentary-style family photoshoots.

- walking
- chatting
- kids being kids
- natural interaction
Those in-between moments are always the ones you end up loving most.
When Do Bluebell Sessions Happen?
Bluebells in Hertfordshire usually appear mid to late April, depending on the weather, and only last a few short weeks.
Because of that, I offer a limited number of sessions each year.
Once they’re gone, they’re gone until next spring.
