Do Wedding Industry Awards Matter?

It might seem odd coming from an award-winning professional photographer, but I genuinely feel that Wedding Industry Awards do not matter. I’ll explain why I think this way.

For me, awards are given by those who perhaps appreciate the technical aspect of how an image has been captured.

Whilst this is something to be applauded – it should be a standard for any professional photographer.

Now that’s not to say that all awards are equal and some rejoice in images that create an emotional response from the person viewing the image.

I suppose what I’m saying is to acknowledge an award as a measure that the photographer in question has reached a certain level of professionalism
but remember to study their work and see if it connects with you.
“A Formula 1 driver will be better placed to get you to your destination in a fraction of the time that a vintage drop-top car can – but perhaps the smell of an old car and the wind in your hair is what you’re going for, not the saving of time!”
The significance of these awards can be subjective.

Investigate your photographer thoroughly (I have a guide to choosing your photographer here) and see if they are the right one for YOU!

With art, there is no right nor wrong (the presumption being that any photographer in question is indeed a professional).
It either connects with you or it doesn’t, as should the photographer themself, and to be comfortable knowing that this person will be spending the day with you and your guests. The way they go about capturing a wedding and the subsequent images will resonate with you, regardless of whether or not they have a mantlepiece of trophy wedding industry awards!
Ultimately, while Wedding Industry Awards can provide a platform for recognition and celebration, vendors and couples should view them with an open mind.
Awards should complement – rather than replace – other factors such as reviews, personal recommendations, and an overall assessment of a vendor’s portfolio and professionalism. In this ever-evolving landscape of weddings, awards can play a role in shaping the industry’s narrative.
They should not be the sole determinant of a vendor’s worth or the quality of their offerings.
