Q: James, what inspired you to start designing wedding stationery?

I’ve been a graphic designer for 25 years, and over time, I found my niche in wedding stationery. There’s something incredibly rewarding about creating designs that are not only beautiful but deeply personal. Every couple has a unique love story, and I love translating that into a tangible keepsake.

Q: Your Instagram bio mentions that you design and craft invitations from scratch. What does that process look like?

Every piece I create is bespoke—no templates, no shortcuts. I start with a conversation to understand the couple’s vision, wedding style, and personality. From there, I sketch concepts, explore different materials, and refine the details to make something truly one-of-a-kind. I love to take client’s comments and feedback to see where that journey takes us, and ultimately we end up with something tangible which we all love.

Q: James, your designs are known for their individuality and clean, professional aesthetic. How would you describe your design style?

I believe great design is about balance—clean, simple, and refined, yet full of personality. My approach is to strip away the unnecessary and focus on strong typography, thoughtful layouts, and high-quality materials. Every piece is designed from scratch to reflect each couple’s individuality, ensuring their stationery feels completely unique.

Q: What draws you to this minimalist yet creative approach?

Simplicity doesn’t mean plain—it’s about intentionality. A well-designed invitation doesn’t need to shout; it should feel effortless, sophisticated, and timeless. I love the challenge of creating something that looks simple but carries depth, whether through carefully chosen typefaces, subtle textures, or innovative formats.

Q: How do you ensure that each couple’s stationery reflects their personality?

I treat every project like a blank canvas. I start with conversations, mood boards, and sketches to understand their style—whether modern, classic, or something unconventional. Then, I build a design that feels true to them, using color, materials, and layout to tell their story in a way that’s understated yet impactful.

Q: Many wedding invitations can feel repetitive. How do you keep your designs fresh and unique?

By avoiding templates. Every piece I create is completely bespoke, which allows me to experiment and push creative boundaries. Whether it’s an unexpected paper choice, an elegant blind emboss, or a modern twist on classic typography, I focus on details that set each design apart.

Q: What’s a design element that couples often overlook but makes a big difference?

White space. Giving the design room to breathe makes everything feel more elevated and intentional. Also, typography—choosing the right typeface and layout can transform a simple invitation into a statement piece.

Q: Your Instagram bio says you’ve been a designer for 25 years. How has that experience shaped your wedding stationery work?

It’s given me a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and precision. Over the years, I’ve refined my eye for detail and learned how to create designs that are both timeless and modern. Professionalism is also key—I guide my clients through the process with clarity and care, making sure every detail is executed to perfection.

Q: What are some must-have stationery pieces beyond the invitation?

The full suite ties everything together—RSVP cards, menus, place cards, thank-you cards and even welcome signage. Seamlessly designed, beautifully cohesive – wedding staionery that ties every detail together from first impression to final thank you.

Q: What’s a common mistake couples make when it comes to stationery?

Not giving themselves enough time! Custom designs take time to perfect, so I always recommend starting early—at least six months before the wedding to avoid last-minute stress.

Q: You’ve been a designer for 25 years—what’s been one of your most memorable wedding stationery projects?

One of my favorites was the watercolour illustration of a wedding venue which was situated next to a magnificent lake. It was printed on watercolour paper which gave a real quality feeling. The invitation was presented in a compact wallet also containing three information cards. Everything just came together and my clients were just over the moon!

Q: You collaborate with photographers like Patrick. How important is it to have professional photos of wedding stationery?

It makes all the difference! Stationery is an art form, and seeing it styled and photographed beautifully alongside other wedding details really brings it to life. It’s also a great way for couples to remember those little details after the big day.

Q: Any final advice for couples choosing their wedding stationery?

Think of your invitations as the first impression of your wedding. They should reflect your personality and set the tone for the day. Most importantly—enjoy the process! This is a chance to create something uniquely yours.
