I’ve always been drawn to beautiful portraits – and I still am today.

Whether it’s David Bailey’s stark black-and-white images, Mario Testino’s unmistakable glamour, Harry Borden’s endless creativity, or Platon’s raw honesty, with his ability to see into a subject, with a style almost as iconic as the people in front of his lens – each of them captures something unforgettable. Their portraits hold moments of fun, poignancy, and quiet reflection, each one stamped with the photographer’s own unmistakable signature. I can still lose hours staring at their work.

That same pull is what I feel when I photograph families (or just the children if parents are feeling shy!).

There’s a huge sense of pride in knowing that, for the fraction of a second it takes to press the shutter, I’ve caught something real.

The gear I use: the lens, the settings etc fades into insignificance years later. What matters is the way an image holds a fleeting look: the cheeky sparkle in an eight-year-old’s eyes before they grow into “big school,” or the quiet shyness that might one day mean something entirely different when they have children of their own.

Natural Family Portrait Photography in Hertford

My approach is professional but wonderfully relaxed (ahem… spoiler alert!). It’s a bit like ordering lasagne at your favourite restaurant, yep, it’s made from the same ingredients you could throw together at home, but somehow it just tastes a million times better.

A Relaxed Approach to Portrait Photography

Every session brings something new: the live wire who adores the camera, the apprehensive face that slowly softens, the parent who catches their breath or bursts out laughing at the perfect shot of their most precious gift.

Those moments never grow old, and neither will the images that hold them.

Why Portraits Matter

Portraits aren’t just pictures; they’re time capsules. Whether it’s a family photograph, a child’s grin, or a quiet, knowing glance, these moments only grow more precious as the years pass.

If this has you thinking about the portraits in your own life – the ones you treasure, or the ones you’d love to create – why not make time for them?
